Sometimes when we are distressed, we come to regard rather unfair thoughts we might have about ourselves or others in a very factual way. However, our thoughts are not ‘facts’, and cognitive behavioural therapy is a process that aims to enable you with a number of tools to examine your thinking and the way this then impacts on your actions and emotions. This ability to step back and assess has helped many people to find ways of being with their difficult emotions, and new or alternative ways of acting in trying circumstances.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is known to be particularly helpful for those experiencing anxiety disorders and depression. It can help with overcoming the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and addressing sleep problems.  If you would like to know more about cognitive behavioural therapy and how it works the Royal College of Psychiatrists provides a useful summary.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is an ‘active’ form of intervention, which is goal-orientated and at the start of each session both the therapist and client are involved in determining what is best to cover in the time available. We will draw ‘maps’ in order to provide clarity and new insights about situations you may be experiencing.

A course of therapy usually lasts between 6-20 sessions, however I can also see you on a longer term basis if that is what you require. Therapy is open to review at regular intervals so that we can make adjustments and focus our work as you would prefer, in line with your goals.
